Police yesterday arrested a young 23-year-old man for allegedly attempting to set Seoul’s Dongdaemun (Great East Gate) on fire, the JoongAng Daily reports. The arson attempt comes six months after Namdaemun, Seoul’s six hundred-year-old southern gate and national treasure, was destroyed by arson in a tragedy that shocked the nation.
After his arrest, the young man, identified by the surname Jung, told police ““I wanted to become a singer, but people around me laughed at my dream. I thought setting Dongdaemun on fire would make me famous.”
